Meeting Notice for August 8, 2012 – “Operation Market-Garden”

The American story of A Bridge Too Far, and General James Gavin.

James_M._Gavin

Date: Wednesday, August 8, 2012
Time: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Venue: Des Peres Lodge

Greetings and welcome:

John and I are looking forward to having you with us on August 8th. The evening will include a two-part discussion about Operation Market-Garden and the life and times of General James Gavin, Commander of the famed 82nd Airborne Division.

Professor McManus’s latest book titled SEPTEMBER HOPE: THE AMERICAN SIDE OF A BRIDGE TOO FAR picks up where Cornelius Ryan left off in his classic account of ill-fated Operation Market-Garden. We will discuss the back-story behind the book — how and why John wrote it and the hard lessons we can draw from this cautionary tale.

The second part of the meeting will feature a discussion about airborne pioneer General James Gavin. He was a West Point graduate and the second youngest division commander in World War II. He is one of the most important combat leaders in American history. Due to John’s research we will have copies of excerpts from the general’s personal war time diary which will be distributed to everyone during the meeting. SEPTEMBER HOPE is available at bookstores and online. It’s selling quite well and is now in its second printing.

Complimentary refreshments and snacks will be available. The program fee is still $35. Space is limited. For your reservation, please call 314-652-3300 or email me direct. Des Peres Lodge is located near Manchester Road and H270. See you soon.

Regards,

Stuart Hartzell
